Career and Workplace Education
The change from the classroom to career is often a difficult time in a young persons life. The Career and Workplace Education programs support that transition by giving students a competitive edge in the workplace.Work Experience allows students to take up jobs they have interests in, giving students participation and experience in a live workplace. Students will work on how to write a professional looking resume and cover letter; how keeping track of their own progress on a tracking sheet, helping with effectiveness in a workplace; the legal rights an employee and employer has; safety in a workplace; and presenting themselves properly to an employer.
CAREER PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE
In the Work Experience course, students are required to complete 100 hours of related work experience. You are also required to complete some related career and work experience related course assignments. It’s a course that can offer you the opportunity to see what the work place looks like for a chosen career path
You become a registered apprentice with the ITA and get a “jump start” on your work based training in a trade while still in high school. A certified tradesperson willing to provide paid work place training needs to agree to sponsor a student for a minimum of 480 hours of paid apprenticeship training.
The student receives 16 credits /4 courses: WRK 11A, WRK 11B, WRK 12A, and WRK 12B toward graduation.
The student could be eligible for a $1000 award after graduation if they satisfy the requirements.
Youth Train in Trades/ Dual Credit
Students work towards completing Level 1 Technical Training in a trade governed by the ITA. The technical training usually occurs at a Post-Secondary Institution like Okanagan College, for example, while still in high school.
Students complete a “Foundation” program at the college, and programs vary in length from 24- 40 weeks. This usually means 1 semester away from high school, or after graduation, and students earn high school credits at the same time as college credit.
Tuition is paid by the School District. For some programs, this could be over $5000 paid for the student. Books, and material fees are the responsibility of the student.
